BUSINESS CONTRIBUTION INDEX (BCI) 2018

The Business Contribution Index (BCI) was developed to understand and quantify the contribution that business is making to drive more growth.

In recent years, business has demonstrated its commitment to social upliftment by addressing many of the problems relating to poverty and underdevelopment that still haunt South Africa. Almost all businesses invest heavily in corporate social investment (CSI) programmes to “give back” mostly to poor communities. However, as admirable as these CSI programmes are, we must also acknowledge that business already contributes an enormous amount to society by doing what it does best: trading products and services for profit in a competitive market.

The BCI was developed to create an accurate picture of the recent impact by business on growth.

HIGH-LEVEL FINDINGS

IQbusiness has developed the Index using a data-driven research approach. By analysing a range of key indicators, we can paint a picture of the recent impact by business on growth and begin to identify broader trends over the last three years. Every indicator used in the Index is drawn from publicly available data which can be independently verified and fact-checked. The Index was completed in July 2018. As a result, it relies on data produced up to the previous year (2017).
